Last June, an album called “The Secret of Us” was released by Gracie Abrams, and in October, the deluxe edition of this album came out. Ever since the album’s initial release, her career has begun to skyrocket, with this album and its tour being her most popular by far. Songs such as “That’s So True,” “Close to You,” and “Risk” have done especially well ever since going viral on TikTok.
Gracie Abrams was born in 1999 in Los Angeles, California. Her dad is JJ Abrams, who famously directed, co-wrote, and co-produced multiple Star Wars movies, and her mom is actress Katie McGrath. Abrams has two siblings, an older and a younger brother. She has been songwriting since the age of eight, though she only began releasing music a few years ago.
After graduating high school at Archer School for Girls in 2018, Abrams went to Barnard College for one year before leaving to focus on her music career. While she is technically on a “leave of absence,” Gracie says that she intends to return to college at some point. She also says that her year at Barnard is a part of what influenced her to have the confidence to pursue her career in music. She felt that she was encouraged to pursue her dream of becoming a musician.
In 2019, Abrams released her first ever single “Mean It” along with a music video. A year later, she announced her first Extended Play (EP) called “Minor.” (An EP is sort of an in between length, being longer than just one single but shorter than a full album) This EP contained multiple singles including “I Miss You, I’m Sorry,” which eventually became one of Gracie’s most popular songs, and later sparked her to write “I Love You, I’m Sorry,” a very different song with a similar style of name that ended up on her second album. Abrams continued to release singles until 2021 when her second EP “This Is What It Feels Like” came out.
After releasing the EP, Abrams went on her first tour, the “This Is What It Feels Like Tour” in 2022. The same year, she was one of the openers for Olivia Rodrigo’s “SOUR” tour, which helped her to gain some more popularity. In 2023, Gracie released her first album titled “Good Riddance.” The album came out in February, with a total of 12 tracks as well as a deluxe edition with four additional songs. The same year, she also opened for a select number of Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” shows which helped to boost her publicity and bring a greater audience to Abrams’ music.
In 2024, Gracie Abrams released her second album, “The Secret of Us.” The album included a song co-written by and featuring Taylor Swift, as well as multiple unreleased tracks that fans had been asking Gracie to release. Some of these songs had been leaked by fans, and others Gracie had performed yet never formally released on Spotify. It also had more singles and became more popular, ending up with a longer and much more popular tour than her previous one. The tour sold out extremely quickly, only a few hours after making tickets available. While Gracie stayed true to herself and her music, most of the songs on this album were catchier than her prior EPs and albums, which catered to a larger audience of listeners than her earlier music.
A very appealing aspect of Gracie’s music is the personal aspect that she brings to her songwriting and singing. She writes from her own experiences and feelings while also managing to make the songs relatable to her audience. This creates a feeling of friendship between her fans and herself, even as a star. Gracie’s music style has evolved between being indie and pop, though her more recent music falls under the pop category much more.
Gracie says that her music reflects herself and her thinking and that she cannot separate it from her opinions. She doesn’t want to be afraid to speak about the things she believes in. Abrams has been very open and vocal about her political views since the beginning of her career. She was a part of a long list of celebrities who condemned the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, and openly endorsed Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. In part of her support, Gracie also performed her song “I Love You, I’m Sorry” at a Harris rally that occurred before the election.
While Gracie Abram’s music career has been short so far, she has still managed to create a large fanbase of loyal listeners and created relationships with other more successful artists, who have helped her to be successful in the industry. Despite her success, she has managed to always stand for what she believes in and stay true to herself, something everyone should be doing.
