Many parents cherish their children more than themselves, a sentiment deeply appreciated by those very kids. Whether it be through caring for them, providing food, or fulfilling their basic needs, parents often prioritize their children above all else. However, for Delilah and her other siblings, it sometimes seems as if she isn’t the only one receiving that level of devotion. Their beloved chihuahua-dachshund mix, Ranger, is treated more like a human than a family pet.

Ranger was adopted in June of 2020, and ever since, it has been love at first sight. She shares the home with two cats, Buttercup and Inigo, but without a doubt, Ranger is the star of the show.

“We got her because another teacher at the school my mom works at was fostering a pregnant dog,” Delilah explains. “She gave birth to puppies, one of them being Ranger, and he gave them away to all the teachers at the school.” Initially, Delilah’s family had no plans to adopt Ranger, but everything changed the moment she entered their home.

Delilah’s father, Lewis Myers, fondly recalls one of his favorite memories from the time they got her. “One of my favorite moments was when we got her and you (Delilah) babied her. She was a little tentative because we were all new. But she felt the love, and before you knew it, she was running throughout the yard with the zippity zooms and running under the trampoline, which was really low to the ground. It’s like she knew it was a fun thing to do.”

One of her most interesting qualities is her name, Ranger. Delilah says her name was inspired by a character from the show We Bare Bears. It was initially going to be Kurt but they later decided Ranger had a more feminine sound to it.

Ranger is adored in the Myers household, but no one spoils her quite like Delilah’s dad. While he once resisted the idea of adopting a dog, he now can’t imagine life without her—and, according to Delilah, she might even be his favorite child.

“She is a fat blob,” Delilah jokes, admitting that she sometimes gets jealous of how much her dad dotes on Ranger. “She’s more favored than me….” she said whilst laughing. Still, she loves Ranger as she is a dog “with one of the most loving and amazing personalities.”

Being a dog hasn’t stopped Ranger from being the most pampered member of the family. Delilah recalls a moment that perfectly illustrates this favoritism: “It was raining, and my dad literally had a whole umbrella for her and held it for her the entire time it was raining… and I was just wet in the rain.” Clearly, when it comes to rain safety, Ranger takes top priority.

And when it comes to food? “She will eat everything,” Delilah says. “I swear she will eat anything and everything presented in front of her.”

Despite the occasional jealousy over her dad’s affection for Ranger, Delilah wouldn’t trade her for the world. Whether she’s zooming around the yard, indulging in endless treats, or enjoying the luxury of her own personal umbrella, Ranger has become an irreplaceable part of the Myers family. Her presence brings endless joy, laughter, and, of course, a little bit of sibling rivalry—just the way a beloved family member should.
