In early 2023, a unique gaming store: Viking TCG was born out of a passion for card games, particularly Magic: The Gathering, and the desire to create a welcoming community for both seasoned players and newcomers. Located on 2943 Honolulu Avenue in Glendale, this shop isn’t just another card store. Its founders, Olin Tellefsen and co., got their start playing games like Magic at other local shops, wanted to bring something new to the table-literally and figuratively.

What sets this shop apart is its blend of gaming and culture. Not only does it offer an array of trading cards, many of which are imported from Japan and Hong Kong, but the store also stocks vintage items and foreign products that are rare in typical game shops. It’s a place where customers can come in, spend a modest amount, and leave with something unique, often without knowing exactly what they’ll find. It retains the charm of a gift shop while catering to a niche audience.

The store has a community-driven atmosphere. Regulars flock to the shop for weekly Magic: The Gathering tournaments held every Tuesday and Thursday, where players of all levels-new players and veterans alike-compete in a friendly, encouraging environment. The store is especially proud of how inclusive and welcoming it is to beginners, emphasizing a culture where everyone feels like they belong, regardless of experience level. One of the owners even sharing that teaching new players is often the most rewarding part of running the shop.

Beyond Magic, the shop is looking to expand its offerings. The owners have big plans for the future, hoping to eventually host events every night of the week. Fridays, for example, are open nights where players can come with friends, play casually, or join impromptu Magic games. They also hope to introduce board games, Dungeons & Dragons, and even music and art events, featuring work from local artists and friends.

With its blend of gaming, cultural products, and a welcoming community, this shop is quickly becoming a local hub for hobbyists and gamers alike, whether they’re hunting for rare cards or just looking for a friendly place to play.
