Recently, a ton of illnesses have been going around Eagle Rock, causing students to stay home from school. Several of my friends were out for sore throats, stuffy noses, or fevers; and I was recently absent from school too, courtesy of the classic stomach bug. During this time of sickness, I didn’t have much to do, and the two-day period of me being sick mainly consisted of me vomiting up everything I ate (not so fun) and binging random documentaries (a bit more fun, I guess). Whether you’re sick and home from school, or just in the mood for a documentary, here are two of my favorites that I would recommend watching whenever you can!
Blackfish (Manny O Productions, CNN Films)
This documentary was intense! Found on Netflix, Blackfish is the story of the (literally) killer whale Tilikum’s journey at Sea World and the ways he was abused, causing him to murder several Sea World trainers. At first, this just seemed like a cute, little, kind of dramatic movie about orcas, but goodness, was I wrong. Blackfish was really entertaining and just downright heavy; it was kind of like a murder mystery but the murderer was an orca! It was the kind of movie that makes you want to jump out of bed and start becoming an activist, if you know what I mean, but it was also really sad, with powerful themes of animal abuse and captivity. If you’re in the mood for a “true crime”-ish thriller (and maybe in the mood to cry a little too), this is a great movie for you!
Brandy Hellville & The Cult of Fast Fashion (HBO Documentary Films, Lightbox)
This was another riveting documentary about the popular teen fashion store we all know, Brandy Mellville. I watched this documentary on HBO Max, but it is also available on other streaming platforms, like Amazon Prime Video and Hulu. This documentary was kind of mind-blowing. Before watching it, I hadn’t bought much from Brandy in the first place, and watching this documentary didn’t make me want to buy anything ever again. This film really exposed Brandy and revealed many sinister things about the business, including it being involved with many corrupt ideas and beliefs. If you’re a fan of Brandy, you might not want to watch this documentary, unless you’re prepared to never want to shop there again. I loved this movie, never really being that much of a Brandy person in the beginning, and I would highly advise giving it a peek.
In conclusion, these are just a few documentaries that I really liked; I also really enjoyed the docu-series America’s Sweethearts, if you want to make a long-time commitment (once you get addicted to watching it, this won’t be hard). So keep these articles in mind next time you’re sick or bored! Trust me, having something actually good to watch will definitely come in handy when you’re stuck at home.
